Hi, Bad Jew,
Thanks for the essay -- I will give the link to my colleague who teaches a manga course. I thought you might want to know that I have updated links for what you've posted above on North Korean manhwa. This link will also give you around 50 pages from all three of the graphic novels.

Cheers,

Wow, i am really surprised by “The Crystal Key”. It really stands out from the other examples. The style differs very much from the other examples. As Tezuka is mentioned i must say that it reminds me even more of the also very influencial Mitsuteru Yokoyama ("The Water Margin" http://www.manga-news.com/public/images/vols/auborddeleau_01_p.jpg).
Not only the drawings, also the image language is elaborated, he is using skillfully elements like closeups and changes of the perspective.
I would say, he is no master like Yokoyama, but he would perhaps have been able to compete in the japanese manga market of the 80s.
This guy knows japanese manga very well, he must have read more than one.

> I think I saw a cut-paper animated film of “Mighty Wing” once on a TV in a Korean restaurant; it had an army of good bugs fighting an army of bad bugs, and it was pretty incredible.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did a good job on it (and probably by the only studio set up for animation there, SEK). An animated "Crystal Key" would be interesting too if it ever got done too (let alone if it ever gets dubbed into English, being reminded of the time when Russian cartoons used to pop up on Bozo the Clown and other kiddie shows in the 50's out of obscure knowledge these were made behind the Iron Curtain).

Actually all these comics are pretty incredible. Any way ordinary citizens can lay hands on them without getting on some kind of list?
