No, I believe they (being the creators) knew how satirical they were being compared to the book, the story as a standalone anime was just presented very seriously. Apparently the cast referred to the Albert character as "Ahoberu" (Dumbass-bert) throughout recording. And, having read the book, some changes (all the main characters being at least vaguely homoerotic except the one character revealed to be gay in the end of the book; everyone being in love with the anime's main character- which is common for anime, but in the book he just thought everyone loved him; the duel scene) were inside jokes or for shock value for people who'd read it already.

Also: mecha.
